Arducoter APM2.8 board is not recognised by windows 10 when plugged in to usb
the device manager does not even show that there is a device plugged in

Try downloading the full Arduino ZIP install package from www.arduino.cc/en/Main/Software
You don’t need to install it, but extract the drivers from the archive, then point windows to them from the windows Device Manager.
This worked for me!

Also have you installed mission planner via the installation wizard, as part of the installation it will install the USB drivers.
