Did INAV 8.0 Just Make Fixed-Wing Flying Too Easy? You Be the Judge!

This is a companion topic for our recent blog post on blog.unmanned.tech

INAV 8.0 has landed, and it seems keen to take the hassle out of fixed-wing flying—perhaps too keen for some of us who enjoy a bit of challenge. Painless360 has had a chinwag with developer Marc to dissect this shiny upgrade, which promises features like an intuitive setup wizard (because who doesn’t love a good wizard?) and fancy OSD layouts. There’s also better GPS lock times, thanks to Blox Assist, and the addition of ADS-B support to keep you in the loop about nearby aircraft—because knowing you’re not alone is comforting, isn’t it?

The revamped Multi Serial Protocol (MSP) promises smoother communication between your flight controller and ground control, while geozones give you more granular control than traditional geofencing. Think of it as setting up a posh private club for your aircraft—drones need boundaries too, after all. The new dead reckoning feature also allows pilots to estimate their position during GPS hiccups, which might just save your drone from an unplanned holiday.

As for those integrating the Walksnail head tracker, you’ll be delighted to know that INAV 8.0 supports custom controls for gimbals, taking your aerial photography to a new level—if you’ve got the talent, that is. For the fixed-wing enthusiasts, the i-Term lock feature is here to ensure your aircraft behaves during sharp manoeuvres, so you can feel like a proper ace pilot without the usual faff.

All in all, INAV 8.0 appears set to make flying a tad more user-friendly, whether you’re a seasoned pro or a slightly bewildered newbie. You can decide for yourself if it’s too easy or just the right amount of helpful.
