PX4 setup checklist: cheap hardware, QGround Control and first hover

This is a companion topic for our recent blog post on blog.unmanned.tech

So, you fancy diving into the world of PX4? Well, grab your tea and settle in. The latest blog post lays out an utterly riveting setup checklist that promises to save you from a DIY disaster. It’s all about getting your hardware sorted (on a budget, no less), installing QGroundControl, and avoiding the common curse of dodgy compass readings — because no one wants a pricey lawn ornament masquerading as a drone.

First up, make sure you’ve got QGroundControl downloaded from qgroundcontrol.com for whatever operating system you’re clinging to. Wire everything to the correct UARTs as per the diagram — trust us, it’s far less faff than reassigning them later. Once that’s done, calibrate your sensors like a pro, set your radio, configure your motors, and don’t forget your failsafes. And when it comes time for the first hover, just remember: keep your props off until everything is double-checked. Safety first!
