Betaflight moves to date-based versioning — biannual releases and a PWA

This is a companion topic for our recent blog post on blog.unmanned.tech

Betaflight has decided to ditch its old numeric versioning system in favour of a more modern date-based scheme. From December, you’ll see version labels like 2025.12.0 – because who wouldn’t want their firmware updates named after the calendar? Major releases are now set for June and December, which should make planning your drone escapades slightly less chaotic.

The Configurator is also getting a facelift, transforming into a Progressive Web App (PWA) that you can install for offline use. This means fewer headaches when picking the right build, as the app version will match your firmware version. So, if you were hoping for a seamless experience, your prayers have been answered (though perhaps not with quite the fervour you were expecting).

This date-based system allows pilots to identify when firmware was released at a glance, making it easier to pick out the right build without consulting Stonehenge for guidance. And don’t worry, past versions aren’t being renamed; they’ll keep their nostalgic numeric tags like a pair of well-worn socks.

In summary, if you fancy a predictably timed Betaflight update and a Configurator that behaves more like a proper app, this change is a win. Support for Betaflight remains crucial, so do consider donating via their PayPal and Patreon links to keep those glorious builds rolling in.
