RadioMaster AX12 — ExpressLRS and GCS in one Android radio, reviewed

This is a companion topic for our recent blog post on blog.unmanned.tech

The RadioMaster AX12 is the latest gadget to grace our skies, combining a handheld radio with ExpressLRS and a ground control station (GCS) all wrapped up in an Android interface. It’s as if someone decided that radios needed a bit more pizzazz—and a 5.5” touchscreen might just do the trick. With a sizable 10,000mAh battery, you won’t be hunting for a power outlet anytime soon, unless, of course, your luck runs out.

Designed for those who prefer simplicity—like bind-and-fly UAV users—the AX12 ditches the full EdgeTX stack for a more streamlined approach. Picture a tablet that can also tell your drone what to do; less hardware fuss, more screen real estate for apps. Just don’t expect it to replace your entire radio setup; it’s more of a clever sidekick than a superhero.

As for inputs and outputs, this device has you covered—HDMI in/out, USB data, and even a headphone jack! It’s practically begging to be the centrepiece of your next outdoor adventure, provided you remember to enable USB host mode when connecting to a flight controller. Don’t blame us if you end up with a glorified paperweight otherwise.

In short, the AX12 is a promising addition to the world of UAVs, especially if you fancy a gadget that consolidates control and telemetry into one neat package. It may not yet run EdgeTX, but with the potential for Android GCS apps, it’s worth a second look for anyone eager to ditch the clutter of traditional setups.
