If you’re contemplating a foray into the world of commercial drone operations in the UK, you might find yourself at a crossroads: PDRA01 or UK SORA? Both paths lead to Operational Authorisation from the CAA, but they cater to different needs. Choose PDRA01 if you’re sticking to the basics—think inspections and photography—with your drone under 25kg and good old VLOS. It’s simpler, cheaper, and quicker than bickering over a cuppa about complex applications.
On the other hand, if you fancy pushing boundaries with BVLOS flights, heavier drones, or flying over crowds (because who doesn’t want to impress the masses?), then UK SORA is your ticket. But be prepared; it requires a bespoke risk assessment and may take longer to nail down.
So, before you dive headfirst into paperwork, ask yourself: do I really need those advanced capabilities, or can I get by with the straightforward PDRA01? Remember, you can always upgrade later—this isn’t a wedding vow, after all.
