Field Flying Maintenance: How do you keep your quads alive in dirt, dust, and wet grass?

Hey everyone!

With the weather staying pretty decent lately, I’ve been out in the fields almost every weekend squeezing in as many packs as possible. But as much as I love flying in open spaces, field conditions are absolutely brutal on gear. Between wet grass morning dew, fine dust, and seeds getting wedged everywhere, post-flight maintenance is becoming a full-time job.

I wanted to share my current routine for keeping my rigs in working order, and I’d love to hear how you guys handle field cleanup and preventive maintenance.

My Post-Field Flying Routine:

  1. The Compressed Air / Soft Brush Clean: Before plugging anything into Betaflight or packing up, I always use a soft anti-static brush and a portable electric air blower to get rid of dried mud, grass bits, and dust around the stack.

  2. Motor Bell & Stator Inspection: Grass fibers wrapped around motor shafts are the worst. I try to pull those out immediately so they don’t destroy the bearings. If I land in dry dirt/sand, I manually spin the bells to listen for grit in the bearings.

  3. Conformal Coating Check: Since morning grass always leaves moisture on the frame, I coat my FC and ESC with Silicone Conformal Coating (leaving the USB port, boot button, and motor pads clean, of course). After hard crashes, I always check under a bright light if the coating hasn’t chipped off near the edges.

  4. Lens & Sensor Care: Clean the FPV camera lens with an optical microfiber cloth. Never rub dry dirt off the glass—always damp the cloth first to prevent micro-scratches.

A Few Questions for the Community:

  • Bearing Maintenance: Do you guys bother flushing grit out of motor bearings with isopropyl alcohol and re-oiling them, or do you just fly them until they get scratchy and replace them?

  • Dealing with Wet Grass: Has anyone had issues with static buildup or short circuits even after applying conformal coating?

  • Field Toolkit Must-Haves: What’s the one tool or cleaning product in your field bag that you can’t live without?
