Mads Tech has come up with a rather nifty hack: arming DJI O3/O4 air units without the need for a flight controller, courtesy of ExpressLRS. The trick? By leveraging the MSP DisplayPort output over UART, you can send an arming command directly to your air unit. This means you can bask in the glory of full RF power without any unnecessary faff.
To get started, you’ll need an ExpressLRS receiver and a 5V BEC. Just connect the dots—TX on the receiver to RX on the air unit and vice versa—and you’re well on your way. Mads also highlights that you can set your receiver to auto-arm upon power-up, because who doesn’t love a bit of automation?
However, be wary of power sequencing; if all your devices spring to life at once, you might end up with a temperamental recording situation. A slight delay in powering the receiver can work wonders for reliable auto-recording.
In summary, this clever workaround not only simplifies your setup but also allows you to enjoy the full capabilities of the DJI air units without the usual complexities. A tidy fix for what can only be described as an annoyingly counterintuitive quirk.
