DarkStar16 tiny FPV flyer — Neo sized quad that prefers calm skies

This is a companion topic for our recent blog post on blog.unmanned.tech

Nick Burns has taken the DarkStar16 for a spin, and it turns out this pocket-sized quad is more about finesse than furious flips. Designed for those who prefer their flying calm—like a Sunday stroll rather than a rollercoaster—this little marvel is perfect for indoor jaunts and light outdoor escapades. With its solid build, quiet props, and a knack for slow cruising, it’s hardly a death-defying thrill-seeker, but it gets the job done without much fuss.

Equipped with a Taker F411 flight controller and Speedix 1003 motors, the DarkStar16 leans heavily towards gentle flying rather than aggressive manoeuvres. It’s got prop protection and a nifty 3D printed battery holder that accommodates various sizes without any ridiculous wrestling match before flight. However, if you were hoping to set the skies ablaze with freestyle antics, you might want to temper those expectations—prop wash and a penchant for wobble are not conducive to daring displays.

In terms of practicality, we’ve got a sturdy carbon fibre frame that claims to withstand the rigours of light bumps, though a hard crash might leave you wishing for some extra patience during reassembly. Flight times hover around four to five minutes with an 850 battery at a relaxed pace, which is just about enough time to think, “Isn’t this nice?” before you land it back down.

If you’re after calm cruising rather than aerial acrobatics, the DarkStar16 could be your new best friend. Just remember, in the world of drones, sometimes it’s about enjoying the journey rather than racing to the finish line.
