The latest firmware updates for the Caddx Ascent have turned it from “probably not” into “actually, maybe.” Initially plagued with stutter issues and a rather lacklustre ecosystem, it now seems to be on a steady path toward redemption. Firmware versions 16.5.3, 16.5.7, and the current 17.5.8 have taken the system from jittery chaos to something resembling usable—particularly in the new 100fps mode, which is where the real magic happens (or at least a more tolerable experience).
While the stutter isn’t entirely vanquished—think of it more like an annoying houseguest who knows when to shut up—it’s nowhere near the catastrophe it once was. The image quality has also improved, though it still isn’t winning any beauty contests. Just remember: if the colours start looking like a dodgy Wi-Fi connection during a Sunday roast, you might want to check if your camera’s been flipped upside down.
Ascent is now a credible option for those looking to dip their toes into the world of digital FPV without selling a kidney, but let’s not kid ourselves—it’s not going to dethrone Avatar HD anytime soon. Think of it as a decent alternative for small quads, casual flying, or budget-conscious pilots looking to transition from analogue without remortgaging their homes.
So, should you give it a whirl? If you’re after affordable digital FPV that no longer feels like a DIY disaster, the Caddx Ascent is finally worth a second look. Just bear in mind it’s not perfect, but then again, neither are most of us.
