A few months back, Sony announced that it was starting a drone company called Aerosense aimed at offering commercial services like inspection and aerial surveys.
However they have recently published a video form a test flight of their VTOL drone which takes of like a helicopter but can fly like a plane. The final version will be able to carry 22 pounds and apparently have an endurance of 2 hours with a max speed of 106 mph.
This aerosense vtol prototype looks very DIYish but still fund to see.
If you are looking to build your own VTOL plane the good news is that the Pixhawk autopilot firmware now supports this but will soon be fully integrated as part of the stable firmware release once team tiltrotor get it all working properly.
